Your Kids Need to Learn Discipline to Success at Martial Arts

When they join a martial arts program, one of the things your children will learn is discipline. In fact, many parents enroll their children in these classes intentionally so they will learn it. But you're definition and the studio's definition of discipline may be different, so decide in advance what you expect it to mean, and make that work for you.

Really, what you want to accomplish in your kid's life is balance and rigor. Kids need guidance and clear rules. When you learn to back up what your child learns at his martial arts class, you are helping him to quickly become a person with character, respect, and morals. When this is reinforced with the physical and spiritual aspects of a martial arts program, he then learns to gain respect for his peers, which helps him build rapport.

When your child attends martial arts classes, he is working constantly, striving to reach the next goal. It's tangible. It's available. He can see it and taste it, and he knows if he works hard, remains focused, he can have it. Whether it's the praise of his instructor, or praise from his parents, or even the next belt or certificate, it's attainable. And attaining that next goal requires discipline.

To ensure your kids have the ideal experience, they must be able to envision and discuss their goals early on. Above all, the goal must be reachable, and the child must have the motivation to want to get there. Without a goal, there's no inspiration, without inspiration there's no motivation, and without motivation children can never expect to learn discipline. Get your kids involved in martial arts programs, help them set and achieve goals, and watch them flower into adulthood.
